what people are saying about RazzmaJazz:

"We've been having RazzMaJazz play at the Heritage Grill for years now, and will continue to have them back again and again. The joy that comes through in their playing touches the hearts of young and old.

Their music is suitable for any event or occasion: we love having them play inside for dinner, outside for brunch, or wandering the streets for the annual New Westminster Show n Shine.

Dave Quinn and the boys really know how to make people smile!"

Royal City Farm Market 150th Birthday Party:

"Just wanted to send along a note of thanks for your performance at the Royal City Farmers' Market this past Thursday. We got some incredible feedback, and most of our shoppers were delighted with the way you interacted with them.

Many people reported that your trio was always smiling and were obviously enjoying yourselves while you played, and one mother reported that her young toddler was completely enthralled with the way you stopped and played just for him and got down to his level while he danced about.

The addition of Razzmajazz to our 150 Celebration market made a big difference for us and helped set a tone of lively fun and a vibrant atmosphere. Thanks again for your time, and for adding so much to our marketplace. Keep up the good work!"

The City of New Westminster 150th Birthday Celebration:

"The 12th Street Merchant Association participated in New Westminster's "150" Celebration Trolley Tour held on June 20, 2009. The event consisted of Heritage Trams pulling up across from the Village Coffee Lounge.

The Razzmajazz Trio, along with four talented Can Can dancers, greeted the Trams with period costumes and tunes. They also joined the Village flappers for some good old "Ragtime" music.

This would be the second time Razzmajazz has entertained at our neighbourhood functions. Why Razzmajazz? They responded in short notice and were fully aware of the needs of our groups. They produced!"

- John Ashdown, President, West End Business Association, 12th Street Merchants Association

“Entertaining, Enjoyable listening. RazzMaJazz first played for our company at our Christmas party (of 225 people) in 2007. The music was perfect for our party. We were able to mingle, hear each other and enjoy the music. We had another company party in March of 2009 for 430 people. We did not hesitate to call on RazzMaJazz for our entertainment. Dave Quinn and the boys truly enjoy their playing, and it comes through in their sound. I would recommend them for any size party."

The RazzMaJazz Trio
"a little razzle-dazzle
with jazz"

By Lori Pappajohn
Record Reporter
  ________________

Enthusiasm for music
had led members of
local jazz trio to a
lifetime of fun
  ________________

Dave Quinn was shaking
like a leaf. The Grade
4 student had just
learned how to play the
clarinet and he was
given a solo - Spanish
Eyes. And was he ever
scared.

"I was so nervous I was
shaking like crazy,"
laughs Quinn who didn't
let the experience
dampen his enthusiasm
for performance. In
fact, the Grade 4 solo
was to be the first of
many in a musical
career that has
spanned decades.

"I like to play in the
community where I live,"
says the New Westminster
resident who heads the
jazz band RazzMaJazz.
"This summer I was able
to do just that. We had
shows at the Heritage
Grill, on the Native
Paddlewheeler, at the
Royal City Star
Riverboat Casino and at
the Quay. It's great
how much opportunity
there is now to play
live jazz in New
Westminster."

RazzMaJazz is dedicated
to performing traditional
jazz in the New Orleans
style. The band performs
music that is fun,
upbeat and spontaneous.

And for Quinn, it all
had roots in his Grade
4 classroom at
Richardson Elementary
in North Delta.

At the beginning of the
year, the teacher,
Dr. Dawson, lined the
students up, looked at
their embouchure and
what they looked like
- and matched them up
with instruments. He'd
say: 'You look like a
clarinet player, you
look like a trumpet
player.' I didn't care
what instrument I got
- I just wanted to play
in the band because I
really like music."

Quinn got a clarinet
- perfect for his future
in jazz.

By Grade 8 he was
doubling on tenor sax
and playing in a
dance band, a concert
band and a Dixieland
band.

"All I cared about was
music," he recalls. When
just a teen, Quinn put
together his own jazz
ensemble and started
playing gigs. The
musicians were too
young to play in bars,
but played just about
everywhere else.

A member of the Whalley
Legion Junior Band,
Quinn was thrilled when
the band went on tour
to England and the
Isle of Man.

And so, as the story
goes, one great tune
led to another, and
Quinn has been making
music ever since.

His current jazz trio
traces its roots to
1986. You may have heard
them. They played at
the Quay a lot and
called themselves the
Fraser River Rats.

"We dressed like bums
- like we'd just climbed
out of the river like
rats," laughs the
Sapperton resident.

Over the years, Quinn
played in a number of
bands and eventually
assembled RazzMaJazz.
A digital reprographics
salesman by day, by
night Quinn brings
smiles to people's
faces with his upbeat
jazz.

Last May, when the
Heritage Grill
Restaurant opened (on
Columbia Street across
from Army and Navy),
RazzMaJazz found the
perfect niche. The grill
wanted New Orleans style
music - and RazzMaJazz
could deliver just that.
The trio has been
playing there ever
since, two to three
times a month.

Influenced by King of
Swing Benny Goodman,
Quinn's sound has been
described as a hot
smooth swingin' style
that engages audiences
and often inspires
them to dance and sing
along. His RazzMaJazz
trio includes
guitarist Don Ogilvie
and acoustic bass
player Casey Tolhurst,
both well-known
musicians in the
Vancouver jazz scene.

Recently, RazzMaJazz
has teamed up with the
legendary guitarist
Michael Dunn, also a
New Westminster
resident. Dunn, an
internationally
renowned guitar
maker, is known for
his great playing
style in the genre
of Django Reinhardt's
Gypsy swing.
